Race Results Update #5,  Shawano, WI

January 5, 2004

The Menomonee Superstars of Sno-Cross in Shawano, WI was the 4th stop on the WSA Worldwide Tour and the fifth stop on our schedule.  Mother Nature was not very kind to us this weekend.  It was in the low 40’s and drizzling when we arrived at the track.  By 5:00 it was raining cats and dogs and the snow on the track was melting fast.  The rain stopped after about an hour and a half which delayed the start of Friday night’s racing.  Saturday the temperatures began to drop and a very strong West wind was blowing.  By Sunday everything was a block of ice and the temperature never got much over 20 degrees.

Friday night’s dash for cash saw both Mike and Bobby competing in the Pro Stock and Pro Open classes as both Pros and Semi-Pros could enter.  Both ran some pretty good rounds and got some very important track time.

On Saturday the Semi-Pro Open class was run with both Mike and Bobby competing in it.  Round one saw Bobby taking a 3rd place finish despite coming off his sled.  Round two was a little better for Bobby.  He was 2nd on the start behind Scott Vig with Ross Erdman chasing him.  After six laps he held off Erdman and finished in 2nd.  In round three Bobby ran well and took 3rd at the checkers.  His 8 points got him into the LCQ where he rode a great race taking 4th which put him into the back row of the final.

Mike Schultz had another spectacular showing in Semi-Pro Open.  In round one Mike had a terrible start and was near the back of the pack.  However, if you know Mike that only makes him a bigger force to deal with on the track.  By the end of lap one he was up to 4th after just rocketing by some sleds.  On lap three Schultz doubles past Kirk Hibbert to take over 2nd.  On the last lap he slices to the inside on the last turn right past Strandlund for 1st place and the win.  In round two Mike had a better start slotting into 3rd after the first turn.  He then passes to 2nd and then on a tear to catch Fahrner he gets side by side and muscles his way past Fahrner and takes over the lead and again wins his heat.  Round three Mike gets a pretty good holeshot and is right with Strandlund up front.  After half of lap one Mike blows by Strandlund and takes over the lead.  He has Ryan Simons Chasing for the next five laps but holds him off for another win.  Schultz goes undefeated in all three rounds of qualifying.

The Semi-Pro Open final is set.  Both Aaron Christensen and Mike Schultz go undefeated in qualifying so to break the tie they go by the number of combatants each faced and whoever faced the higher amount gets the #1 spot.  That turned out to be Aaron.  The qualifying order is #10 Aaron Christensen, #465 Mike Schultz, #802 Scott Vig, #13 Jeff Gruhlke, #20 Tyler Olson, #130 Willie Elam, #67 Ryan Simons, #121 Jerrod Fahrner, #127 Dale Brooks, #525 Dany Ekre, #333 Billy Waldoch, #781 Robbie Malinoski, #115 Jonny Hentges, #244 Bobby LePage, #618 Jesse Johnson.  Once the start, Mike gets off the line with a pile of sleds and slots into 3rd.  Bobby slots in about midpack.  By the end of lap one Mike has passed into 2nd and is chasing Scott Vig.  Bobby sits about 9th in the pack.  After 10 laps at the checkers Mike crosses in 2nd place and Bobby finishes in 9th place.  Here’s the kicker, Mike broke his right big toe in round one when he jammed his foot after an awkward landing.  He rode the remaining two rounds and the final with this broken toe.  Mike was awesome all day in spite of the broken toe.  Bobby looked very strong also and his 9th place finish in this very tough class is very commendable.

Mike scratched from the Pro Stock class for the rest of the weekend due to the broken toe.  The main reason was once the boot came off there was no getting it back on with the swelling.

Bobby had an awesome day of qualifying in Semi-Pro Stock on Sunday.  In round one Bobby was off the line in 2nd place chasing down Brandon Joyce.  He had a substantial lead on the 3rd place sled and finished round one in 2nd place.  Round two had Bobby again in 2nd place on the start.  He quickly makes short work of Josh Goble and passes for the lead with Ross Martin in tow.  Ross is on the attack trying to get by LePage.  LePage will hear nothing of that and keeps holding Martin off.  On the last lap Martin and LePage come out of the last turn side by side but LePage finds more speed and takes the win for round two.  In round three LePage surges off the line and slots into 1st place on lap one.  He has Billy Waldoch to contend with all race long.  At the end of six laps LePage holds off Waldoch to take 1st at the checkers.

Going into the Semi-Pro Stock final Bobby has 4 points in qualifying making him the #2 qualifier behind #192 Jeff Snow who went undefeated.  All fifteen sleds are on the line with ten in the front row and five in the back.  On the start it’s fifteen sleds into the first turn.  As you might imagine it wasn’t always pretty.  Unfortunately Bobby gets rolled over and comes off his sled.  This puts him in the back for the entire race as he lost a lot time getting back to his sled and re-firing.  At the checkered LePage finished in 15th place.  He had a great day in qualifying and there isn’t much you can do when you get munched on the start.

This was a great weekend in spite of Mike’s broken toe and Bobby’s rollover on the start.  We look forward to this coming weekend at Canterbury Downs in Shakopee, MN for the 5th race of the WSA National circuit.  We thank you and appreciate your support of North Country Racing.
